Is College Important?

When you're looking ahead to what you want to do with your future, you may find yourself wondering why college is important. But while there are jobs you can jump into with a high school diploma, 76 percent of people surveyed believe getting a college education is more important now than it was in the 1990s or early part of this century.

Why Is College Important for Your Career?

A college education, whether you choose a two-year or four-year college, is important to your success in your chosen career, and, for that matter, determining what your chosen career will be. The Bureau of Labor Statistics compared weekly earnings and unemployment rates for people with less than a high school degree through those with a doctoral degree in 2009. High school graduates made an average of $626 a week and faced 9.7 percent unemployment, where people with a two-year associate's degree made $761 a week, with 6.8 percent unemployment, and those workers with a bachelor's made $1,025 on average per week, and faced only 5.2 percent unemployment.

Jobs which are predicted to have strong growth for college grads (along with median salaries) include:
  • Registered nurses: $63,750
  • Post-secondary teachers: $64,680
  • Computer software engineers: $87,480
  • Management analysts: $72,250
College is important for more reasons than finding a career that makes a lot of money. A college education can give you a broader perspective on the world and more knowledge of developments in the communities around you and increase your understanding of your community, nation and world, and let you discover new areas of knowledge

Why is college important? Because it can help you decide what you really want to do with your life, then provide a map for getting there.
