How To Get Ready For College?

Think getting ready for college means packing your bags and buying textbooks? Think again. The college preparation process should start years before that. Here are some tips on how to really get ready for college:

It Starts in High School
Start impressing college admissions officers now by enrolling in challenging courses. It's generally recommended that you take four years of language arts, three years of math, three years of science, three or four years of social studies, at least two years of a foreign language, and at least one year of arts. Additionally, electives such as computer science or a business class could be beneficial. If you can, try to take Advanced Placement courses, which could help you to get a jump on college credit while still in high school.

Use this time to demonstrate your maturity, your involvement with and willingness to give back to the community, and your readiness to handle responsibility by volunteering, taking part in extracurricular activities, or doing community service. Or take a part-time job; this also helps you to save up for college. You should start growing a college savings as early as possible.

Most colleges require SAT and/or ACT scores, so take them early and often in order to earn the best scores possible.

How Ready Are You?
Make sure you're also ready financially and emotionally. Attend college or job fairs to explore potential careers. Investigate all the financial aid opportunities that may be open to you. Start talking to academic counselors and resident advisors at your chosen college; they can be helpful in pointing you toward orientations, fairs, and information sessions.

Getting ready for college is a daunting process, but it will help to ensure that once your first class starts, you're ready to take on all college has to offer.
